Powerlifting is a strength sport.  Competitors do three lifts.  The first lift is the Squat, a deep knee bend with weight on the back.  The second lift is the Bench Press, a chest exercise.  The third lift is the Dead Lift, where the weight starts on the ground and is lifted to waist height. 

Each person gets three attempts at each lift.  The best lifts in each exercise are added to give the Total.
